Is an object not only a product of an artists handiwork but also a compilation of the creator's feelings and desires during the creation? Do subsequent owners also leave an imprint in an objects essence?
I wish I had paid more attention in science classes in school. (Also wish I had taken more science classes.) As usual I picked out tidbits of information that fascinated me to remember. One of those facts was a description of atoms or maybe it was molecules and how whenever you walked into a room the little parts (neutrons? electrons?) that encircle the nucleus of these minute particles intermingle with all the other particles already in the room. Anyway, I was thinking of this in the acquisition of this BLB (Beautiful Little Bird),
A friend is in the process of moving and downsizing. As I was looking through her possessions with her son, I spotted BLB on the table next to her television. I picked it up and just instantly fell in love with it. BLB is very pretty but I think why I was drawn to it was the feel--very smooth wood and a very well balanced heaviness. Anyway, I asked Bernadette if I could have it and of course she said "yes."
I took BLB home with me and set it around in different places and always thought of Bernadette when I saw it. However, I have been downsizing and decluttering since I have been disposing of my parents' things so I was having a bit of ambivalence about BLB. So I decided to move BLB into Miss Molly Ug to be returned to Bernadette the next time I was in Houston. As fate would have it, Bernadette called asking about Wade and I broached the subject of returning BLB. I didn't want Bernadette to think I wasn't grateful and/or didn't like it, but I just don't need any more stuff.
Well this is a long way round story, but Bernadette proceeded to tell me that she would be glad to have BLB back. It turns out that this had been a gift from Bernadette to her mother. Bernadette related how her mother would have been fine with me taking BLB to Ohio with me. Her mother loved travel and new experiences. So that settles the disposition of BLB, she and the imprint of Bernadette's mother is traveling with me on a two year adventure and after which he will be returned to Bernadette to be with her.
Just wondering--do inanimate objects have a memory? Do they project those memories into the human realm?
